The Suzuki Jimny continues where the now-discontinued Jimny small SUV left off. Increasingly stringent emissions regulations meant the latter was no longer viable as a family car: it risked jeopardising the brand’s chance of meeting the 95g/km across-the-range target outlined in European legislation.
But then Suzuki realised small vans are covered by separate, more lenient emissions targets. And so the original model lived on—just sans rear seats.
Equipment, options and extras
The Jimny is elegant in its simplicity: there’s a grand total of one trim level, take it or leave it. Its standard equipment includes alarm, aircon, cruise control, electric mirrors and automatic headlights. You also get a DAB radio, as well as a multifunction steering wheel to control Bluetooth, audio settings, and the cruise control and speed limiter functions.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
Much of the original Jimny small SUV’s appeal lay in its pricing—and this remains true for this new iteration. And if the Jimny is used as a company car, businesses will be able to claim back the VAT, rendering it even more affordable.
Indeed, in the context of the 4×4 offroad commercial vehicle market, the Jimny is just over half the price of the short-wheelbase Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial—and less than half the price of the Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top. In fact, the only commercial SUV that gets close to the Jimny is the Dacia Duster Commercial.
Given the rarity of the Jimny—Suzuki has allocated just 400 per year in the UK—its residual values will likely be strong. Ultimately, then, it’s the fuel bills that will probably be most expensive—the Jimny’s fuel economy is only 37mpg.

Safety and security
The Jimny comes with hill hold assist and hill descent control, as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system and eCall, the automatic emergency service contacting system.
The Car Planet verdict
While technically a van, the Jimny is essentially a passenger car with a larger boot. Its primary selling points are its offroad talent and one of the cheapest starting prices of any commercial vehicle.
