There are plenty of desirable seven-seat SUVs available if you have a large budget, but the Peugeot 5008 demonstrates that you don't need to spend a fortune to get a great one.
The 5008 costs roughly half as much as luxury seven-seat SUVs with premium badges, such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90, yet it offers many of the same benefits. You still get a commanding driving position, a stylish interior, and a wealth of safety features.
Essentially, it's a more spacious version of the excellent Peugeot 3008, so it has strong foundations. The main difference is that while the smaller 3008 is available as a plug-in hybrid, the 5008 comes with either a diesel engine or a self-charging petrol hybrid.
Equipment, options and extras
The 5008 comes well equipped as standard, featuring an infotainment touchscreen, automatic lights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, LED dipped headlights, and a rear-view camera. The entry-level Active trim includes 17in alloy wheels, keyless start, dual-zone climate control, and power-folding door mirrors.
However, we recommend spending a bit more for the mid-spec Allure trim. This upgrade provides a larger infotainment screen, keyless entry, and a slightly more upscale interior with ambient lighting.
The range-topping GT trim adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, effectively allowing the 5008 to handle much of the work during long motorway drives. It also includes a foldable passenger seat, rear picnic tables, rear blinds, and several sporty cosmetic enhancements. Considering the small price increase from the Allure trim, it’s worth considering.
Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
For cash buyers, the Peugeot 5008 is priced similarly to an equivalent Skoda Kodiaq and is significantly cheaper than any version of the Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento, while the Citroën C5 Aircross comes in at a lower price point. Although the Ford Kuga and Sorento offer better resale values, the 5008 still holds its value reasonably well. While servicing and insurance costs are slightly higher than average, the difference is only a few hundred pounds over a three-year ownership period.
If you drive a company car and are considering a regular petrol or diesel, the petrol hybrid 5008 is a sensible choice, as it will cost you much less in BIK tax compared to the Sorento or Santa Fe.
Safety and security
In terms of safety, Euro NCAP awarded the Peugeot 3008 five stars in its crash tests, and the larger 5008 received the same rating due to the similarities between the models. The scores are strong across all categories, though the Toyota RAV4 offers better protection for the driver’s chest and children in the rear seats.
Every model is equipped with active safety features, including automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, eCall emergency assistance, and speed-limit recognition. All trims feature a driver attention alert system to warn when the driver is fatigued. The Allure trim adds automatic high beams, while GT models include a blind-spot monitoring system.
Security experts at Thatcham Research rated the 5008 five stars out of five for theft resistance and four stars for its ability to withstand break-in attempts.
Reliability
The 5008 comes with a 2-year Peugeot warranty, followed by a 1-year dealer warranty. That’s normal for the class, but some manufacturers offer longer warranties as standard, including Kia, Toyota and Hyundai.
The Car Planet verdict
The Peugeot 5008 stands out for its style, practicality, and driving pleasure, making it one of our top choices for seven-seat SUVs. It’s fairly affordable both to purchase and maintain, particularly with the hybrid petrol engine, which we recommend. We prefer the mid-range Allure trim. If you require additional space, the Kia Sorento offers more room but comes at a higher price.
