We like ambition at Car Planet. We value audacity. That’s why we love the self-confidence of the Peugeot 2008.
For decades Peugeot has been competing with the more mainstream brands—yet if you choose a car higher up the 2008’s trim and engine ranges, this small SUV’s price tag strays into the territory of the more premium Audi Q2.
But the best bit about the 2008’s seemingly big dreams is that they’re not even that fanciful—you’ll see that the moment you feast your eyes on its lavish interior. What’s more, it’s one of the largest cars in the small SUV class, so it’s slightly more expensive than its competitors the Ford Puma and Renault Captur, but you’re getting more for your money.
Unlike the smaller 208 hatchback it’s based on, the 2008 comes with a choice of just two petrol engines, with outputs of 99 and 129bhp, but there’s also a fully electric version. But before we delve too deeply into the 2008, let’s check in with its key stats.

Equipment, options and extras
The Peugeot 2008’s entry-level trim Active Premium includes an impressive amount of kit, including parking sensors, automatic windscreen wipers, 16in alloy wheels, cruise control, touchscreen infotainment and automatic air conditioning. That being said, we still recommend taking a step up to the Allure Premium trim, because it brings privacy glass, smarter seats, 17in alloy wheels, automatic emergency braking, a rearview parking camera and a selection of styling tweaks.
If you want the finest kit on the 2008 roster, you’ll want to upgrade even further. The GT trim includes front parking sensors, heated front seats and an upgraded infotainment system. It is relatively expensive though, and you might want to check out its comparable competitors the Audi Q2 or the larger Škoda Karoq before splashing that cash.
Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
The Peugeot 2008 is priced toward the more expensive end of the small SUV class, so its closest rivals are the Audi Q2 and Volkswagen T-Roc. The same goes if you’re looking at buying through PCP finance—the 2008 commands a higher monthly rate than an equivalent Ford Puma, Škoda Kamiq and Renault Captur.
Disappointingly, the 2008 isn’t predicted to hold on to its value as well as many of its competitors, including the three above. But thanks to its relatively low CO2 emissions it does make much more financial sense for company car drivers paying BIK tax.

Safety and security
The automatic emergency braking of the Peugeot 2008’s entry-level Active Premium models is less sophisticated than that of the more expensive trims, which is why Euro NCAP awarded the range two separate safety scores: a full five stars for the Allure Premium models and above, but only four for Active Premium. Yet when it comes to chest protection and whiplash protection for rear passengers, no version of the 2008 matches the finest of its rivals, most notably the T-Roc.
The whole range comes with lane-keeping assistance, but blind spot monitoring is standard only on the GT trim. Isofix child seat mounts on the two outer rear seats are standard on all trim levels, and the GT trim also includes them on the front passenger seat.
Reliability
The Peugeot 2008 comes with a 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty. That’s not particularly long compared to that of Kia, one of its key rivals.

The Car Planet verdict
The Peugeot 2008 doesn’t just look the part both inside and out-, but it’s also well equipped and boasts a range of punchy and efficient petrol engines. However, its competitors the Ford Puma and Škoda Kamiq are better all-rounders, as is the Audi Q2 if you’re looking for a premium badge.
