Common wisdom dictated that, if you wanted a good-looking coupé, you simply had to live with compromises. That was until the first Mercedes MLS rocked up, complete with four doors and svelte profile. No manufacturer had conceived of combining four-door versatility with the rakish and front- and rear-end looks of a two-door coupé—and the CLS’s popularity speaks for itself. But before we delve too deeply into the CLS, let’s check in with its key stats.

Equipment, options and extras
Despite its sporty and intimate interior, the Mercedes CLS is still spacious for taller passengers, albeit with slightly tight headroom. Compared to a two-door coupé, with its extra doors the CLS makes life much easier for anyone getting in or out of the rear. Once inside, leg room is fine, although not as good as that in the CLS’s rival the BMW 6 Series. You might struggle though to get three abreast at the back, unless they’re all kids.
The CLS’s saloon-style boot lid leaves a narrow aperture compared to the wide-opening tailgate of another of the CLS’s competitors, the Audi A7—so the CLS won’t fit especially bulky items. There’s still a good amount of space otherwise though, as well as decent additional underfloor storage, including a collapsible basket you can unfold and use as a container. And if you need even more room, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats come as standard, enabling you to fit longer items as required.
Safety and security
The Mercedes CLS comes with automatic emergency braking as standard, as well as lane assistance and traffic sign recognition. Blind spot monitoring is reserved for the optional Driving Assistance Plus package.

The Car Planet verdict
The Mercedes CLS may have four doors, but you still trade practicality for style. Otherwise though it offers fabulous pace and tidy handling.
