The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is great to drive, fancy inside, and practical for its class. Find yours at Car Planet today!

Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque changed the brand forever. Prior to its watershed launch the 4×4 maker’s SUVs were good-looking enough, although their aesthetic was still fairly utilitarian. But the designers of this second-generation Evoque opted for radical new styling, clearly influenced by the manufacturer’s pricier Range Rover Velar, such as in its tighter front and rear lights and flush-fitting door handles, which slide out elegantly upon unlocking.

Equipment, options and extras

This iteration of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque boasts a more sophisticated infotainment system and more powerful engines, featuring mild-hybrid technology to boost efficiency. Every version comes with climate control, keyless start, 17in alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic LED headlights, heated front seats and power-folding door mirrors.

The S trim brings 18in alloys, as well as leather upholstery, rear animated indicators and heated 12-way electrically adjustable front seats. This trim is easily our pick of the bunch for value. However, you might be tempted by the Dynamic S, similar to the S but with sportier styling, not to mention 19in alloys. The Dynamic S is absolutely worth consideration, especially for its electric tailgate, blind spot assist and automatic high-beam assist.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Range Rover Land Rover Evoque is predicted to hold its value extremely well—better in fact than its rivals the Audi Q3, Volvo XC40 and Alfa Romeo Tonale. That’s especially good news for private buyers when you consider the entry-level Land Rover Evoque’s price tag comes somewhere in the middle of its competitors the XC40 and BMW X1. It’s also worth noting that its PCP finance rates are competitive, going some way to offset its poor fuel economy. (The Land Rover Evoque’s petrols are particularly thirsty.)

It’s less good news for company car drivers: the Land Rover Evoque’s high CO2 emissions and list price will bump up the monthly tax bill. Except for the plugin hybrid P300e, which is pricer to buy but rewards company car drivers with low CO2 emissions, giving it easily the lowest BIK company car tax rating of the range. The P300e has the best fuel economy of the lineup, in fact, although you’ll see the benefit only if you change the battery regularly.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP awarded the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque the full five stars for safety, although it didn’t score as highly as its rivals the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 for adult occupant crash protection. That being said, it did beat the Q3 for child occupant protection.

The Range Rover Evoque comes with a raft of technology to prevent a crash, including lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking and a driver tiredness alert system. Blind spot monitoring is optional on most trims, and standard on the R-Dynamic SE, along with clear exit and rear traffic monitors.

Finally, the Range Rover Evoque comes with two sets of Isofix child seat mounts, one on each outer rear seat. However, there’s no option to add a third set on the front passenger seat.

Reliability

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque comes with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. That’s the same as BMW, and slightly better than Volvo’s 3-year, 60,000-mile warranty.

The Car Planet verdict

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque may have attracted you for its looks, but it’s a fine car in many other areas, too. It’s a great drive, fancy inside, and practical by the standards of its class. It also depreciates slowly, so you should get much of your investment back when you sell—and its monthly PCP finance costs are surprisingly competitive. Finally, its plugin version offers compellingly inexpensive costs for company car drivers.
