The Land Rover Range Rover has immense road presence, superb handling and an upmarket interior. Find *yours* at Car Planet today!

The Land Rover Range Rover started out as a rugged, utilitarian vehicle. Now it’s the epitome of luxury SUV.

While the original was designed so you could hose mud from the interior, the Range Rover’s recent iterations have been more likely to steal sales from limos than farm vehicles.

This sixth-generation Range Rover set out to do what its predecessor did—but better. This latest model is bigger and pricier too, of course, but then the same goes for all the best luxury SUVs.

The Range Rover comes in two sizes. The standard-wheelbase (SWB) comes in at just over 5m long, whereas the long-wheelbase (LWB) has an extra 20 cm between the front and rear axles to up the amount of room inside. In fact, the LWB boasts an extra row of seats, meaning you can ferry around up to seven people. Or you can opt for its ‘super-luxe’ four-seat form, with two separate reclining armchairs in the back. There’s also a vast range of engines to choose from—unsurprising for a car sold in over 170 countries, each of which has different attitudes toward the various fuel types—and even more divergent taxes on them, too.

Equipment, options and extras

The Land Rover Range Rover’s trim level starts at the SE, which is well equipped and actually the trim we recommend. It brings 21in alloys as standard, although they can be swapped for 20in alloys at no extra cost. There’s also adaptive cruise control with steering assist, as well as a plush leather interior with wooden veneers and luxuriously thick carpets.

The HSE introduces bigger alloys, not to mention heated and ventilated rear seats, the Autobiography brings massaging seats, and the range-topping SV has pretty much everything else you can imagine—with a price tag to match.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Land Rover Range Rover is an expensive car even by luxury SUV standards. Its rival the BMW X7 undercuts it comfortably, and the Audi Q7 is dramatically cheaper. The Range Rover’s top-end versions even muscle in on Bentley Bentayga territory, and there’s plenty of scope to send the price soaring still higher with some ticks on the options list. The only car that makes the Range Rover look like a bargain is the unbelievably expensive Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

That being said, the Range Rover’s fuel economy is reasonable by the standards of the class, although it’s still a fairly thirsty car even if you opt for a diesel. At least you have a big tank to extend the time between fuel stations: 72 L in the plugin hybrid, 80 in the diesel, and 90 in the petrol.

Company car buyers will favour the plugin hybrid, with its incredibly low CO2 emissions and impressively long range which places it into one of the lowest BIK tax bands. This is a major advantage the model holds over its luxury SUV rivals, all of which sit in higher bands. Just bear in mind though that the P440e, with its 70-mile range, sits in a lower band than the 69-mile P510e. Another plus is the fact that the plugin hybrid charges fast, with a maximum speed of 50 kW taking it from 0 to 80% charge in under an hour, and to 100% from a 7kW home wall box in 5 hours.

Safety and security

The Land Rover Range Rover boasts a lot of safety equipment as standard, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Eventually there will even be an armoured version available.

Reliability

The Land Rover Range Rover comes with a 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

The Car Planet verdict

The Land Rover Range Rover has an almost unparallelled road presence, in combination with superb handling and an upmarket interior. Its plugin hybrid version makes great sense for company car drivers, while the entry-level D300 is your best as a private buyer. But no matter which version you go for—and no matter your metric—the Range Rover is expensive.
