Despite its smallness compared to its siblings the F-PACE and all-electric I-PACE, the Jaguar E-PACE is still relatively sizeable, equivalent to the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Volvo XC40. It comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines, most of which have mild-hybrid technology to boost fuel economy. There’s also the plugin hybrid P300e, which is both the fastest and most efficient model. Most versions of the E-PACE are four-wheel–drive and have an automatic gearbox, although if you’d prefer front-wheel–drive you can opt for the entry-level P160 petrol, the cheapest model in the range.

Equipment, options and extras

The E-PACE is more expensive than its rivals, but the extra kit this entails more than compensates for the differential in price point. Even the entry-level R-Dynamic S brings 18in alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, parking aids, wireless phone charging, a fabulous infotainment system, and heated windscreen and front seats.

All of these features make the R-Dynamic S easily our favourite trim—but you might want to step up to the mid-spec R-Dynamic SE Black, with 19in alloy wheels, keyless entry, panoramic roof, additional safety equipment and an upgraded Meridian sound system. Or if you’re feeling especially fancy, you’ll love the top-spec R-Dynamic HSE Black, with all the features of the previous two trims plus 20in alloy wheels, suede cloth headlining, Ebony Windsor leather seats, and 16-way electrically adjustable front seats with heating and cooling.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The E-PACE commands a higher list price than most of its competitors, similarly to the Range Rover Evoque—although unlike the latter the E-PACE doesn’t counter its expense with the promise of significantly slow depreciation. In fact, it’s predicted to shed value faster than its rival the Volvo XC40—so if you’re buying on finance, the XC40 will probably set you back less per month.

Likewise, the regular petrol and diesel E-PACE models are generally pricier to run as company cars than most competitors because of their relatively high CO2 emissions. The exception is the P300e plugin hybrid, by virtue of its decent electric range and low emissions, which give it a superb BIK tax rate. The P300e is also the most fuel-efficient version of the E-PACE, able to make as high as 197mpg. But of course, as with all plugin hybrids, you’ll only see a figure anything close to that if you keep the battery topped up at all times. Meanwhile, the fuel economy on the diesels is nothing special, particularly compared to rivals the Audi Q3 and BMW X1—and the petrols are even thirstier.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP awarded the E-PACE a full five stars for safety, although it’s worth noting its rivals the BMW X1, Volvo XC40 and Range Rover Evoque scored better overall.

Regardless, the E-PACE brings a raft of excellent preventative technology, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition, and a driver alert system for tiredness. Moreover, the trims above the entry-level R-Dynamic S bring blind spot assist, rear collision monitor and rear traffic monitor (although with the Driver Assist you can add these features to entry-level models).
