The Hyundai Tucson is a spacious, comfortable ride with a cavernous boot and plush interiors. Find *your* Tucson at Car Planet today!

Hyundai has given the Tucson some fresh credentials in the last few years. It’s now available as both a full and plugin hybrid, and the standard petrol engines come with mild-hybrid technology. (There are no diesels in this range.) There’s a variety of trim levels to choose from, including the sportier-looking N Lines and fancy Premium and Ultimate models.

Equipment, options and extras

The entry-level Tucson SE Connect models come generously equipped, with 17in alloy wheels, cruise control, an infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, and electrically adjustable lumbar support for the driver.

Meanwhile, the N Line models bring heated seats, ambient lighting, LED headlights and sportier exterior styling. Only marginally pricier is the Premium, bringing adaptive cruise control, a black two-tone roof, an eight-speaker Krell premium sound system, and 18in wheels (although 19in are available on the Hybrid and Plugin Hybrid Premium models).

Topping the range is the luxurious Ultimate trim, with 19in alloy wheels, an electric tailgate, a panoramic roof and three-zone climate control. However, the Ultimate pushes the Tucson into the price range of the markedly plusher Volvo XC40 and Range Rover Evoque.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Tucson brings lots of kit as standard, but for this pleasure you pay a higher starting price than you would for an equivalent SEAT Ateca or Škoda Karoq. The upper trims push the Tucson into the premium territory of the BMW X1, Volvo XC40 and Range Rover Evoque. And while at this price the latter is limited to a diesel engine, it holds onto its value far better.

The plugin hybrid’s low CO2 figure of 31g/km and competitive 38-mile official electric range make it the cheapest option as a company car. On an empty battery you can still expect 36mpg from the 1.6L petrol engine. The 1.6 T-GDi 230 Hybrid version produces as little as 127g/km, placing it in a decent tax bracket 5% lower than the entry-level petrol 1.6 T-GDi 150 manual.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP awarded the Tucson five stars for safety, and it brings plenty of safety kit as standard to help prevent an accident in the first place. Every Tucson comes with automatic emergency braking, trailer stability assist, speed limit recognition and a driver attention warning system. There’s also a system that automatically applies the brakes after a collision to ensure you don’t roll forwards and have a secondary impact.

Stepping up to the Premium trim brings a blind spot warning system and rear–cross-traffic alert, while the range-topping Ultimate models introduce the Highway Drive Assist feature which adjusts your steering to keep the car centred in your chosen lane.

Reliability

The Tucson comes with a 5-year unlimited-mileage warranty. That’s better than most of its rivals, except Kia, which covers for up to 7 years.

The Car Planet verdict

The Hyundai Tucson is spacious and boasts a cavernous bot and plush interiors. It’s a comfortable ride and handles well.
