The Ford Edge is capacious, comes with loads of equipment as standard, and is a comfortable drive. Find *yours* at Car Planet today!

Only two versions of the Ford Edge were made available here in the UK, both of the same 2L diesel engine: one with 178bhp, the other with 207bhp. There’s also a choice of four trim levels: the entry-level Zetec, the glamorous Titanium, the aggressively styled Sport (later renamed ST-Line), and the luxurious Vignale.

Regardless of which power output you select, you’ll enjoy an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The entry-level 148bhp Titanium is two-wheel–drive, while the 235bhp ST-Line and Vignale are both four-wheel–. Yet despite the difference in power, every version of the Edge can comfortably tow a braked trailer weighing up to 2,000kg.

Equipment, options and extras

The Ford Edge is an incredibly comfortable drive, with broad and well-padded seats, not to mention ample space for front and rear passengers alike. The boot is massive, too, a big practical square. Capaciousness aside, there’s no third row of seats, unlike in the Edge’s rivals the Škoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe. However, if a five-seater will suit you just fine, you’ll enjoy the Edge’s pleasant interiors.

The top-tier trims of the Edge bring larger wheels, yet our favourite trim is the lower-tier Titanium, which we recommend combining with the 178bhp engine, as the more powerful option simply isn’t noticeably faster, and it also suffers from poorer fuel economy.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Ford Edge brings relatively steep running costs, and its fuel economy isn’t the best at just 40mpg. Its road tax is also quite high on any vehicle registered 1 April 2017, at least £155 a year, and more if you opt for the 207bhp version. It’s also worth knowing that any Edge that cost over £40,000 when new will incur the higher rate of £475 a year.

All of that being said, the Edge is low-maintenance, and Ford offers very reasonable servicing and repair costs. What’s more, if your Edge is over three years old you’ll benefit from a menu pricing scheme called Motorcraft, which offers service and repair costs at fixed discounted price at all Ford dealers.

The Car Planet verdict

The Ford Edge may bring relatively high running costs, but it’s spacious, well equipped, and a smooth drive.
