The Fiat 500 is stylish, charming and adaptable to tougher driving conditions. Find *your* 500 at Car Planet today!

Since its re-release in 2008, the Fiat 500 has been a massive success, capturing hearts with its charming design, Italian flair, and attractive pricing. It has become a favorite among both new and used car buyers.

Over the years, the standard 500 has seen numerous updates and tweaks, with various versions introduced to broaden its appeal. The current model, in standard form, is now known as the 500 Hybrid. For those who crave an open-air experience, there's the 500 Cabrio, a soft-top version. The 500 Electric also caters to those seeking an eco-friendly alternative.

Historically, the 500 has been offered with a range of engine options, including 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, as well as a 0.9-litre two-cylinder Twinair engine, which was praised for its fuel efficiency—though it didn't always deliver in practice. For those prioritizing economy, a 1.3-litre diesel was available, though it tended to be noisy and less refined, especially in city driving. Following a 2011 tweak and a 2016 facelift, both the 1.4 petrol and the 1.3 diesel were phased out. The sporty Abarth variants are powered by the 1.4-litre T-Jet engine, with power outputs ranging from 135bhp to 187bhp, offering more performance for enthusiasts.

Equipment, options, and extras

The Fiat 500 comes in three main trim levels: Pop, Popstar (later replaced by Sport), and Lounge. Pop is the entry-level model, featuring LED daytime running lights, a height-adjustable steering wheel, and Fiat's Uconnect infotainment system with USB connectivity. Popstar adds air conditioning and split-folding rear seatbacks, offering more comfort and practicality. Lounge, the top trim, comes with higher-end features like a fixed glass roof, rear parking sensors, fog lights, a DAB radio, and Bluetooth for added convenience and luxury.

In later models, Fiat introduced several special trims for the all-electric and Hybrid versions, including Action, Connect, Dolce Vita, Dolce Vita Plus, Hey Google, Icon, La Prima, Launch, Passion, and Red, each offering unique features and design elements.

The Abarth models stand apart as sportier variants, boasting performance-oriented features and styling to appeal to hot hatch enthusiasts.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The Fiat 500 offers a variety of engines and fuel efficiency ratings depending on the model:

1.4-litre petrol (discontinued in 2011) was less common and can be found in the used market for £2,500 to £5,000. It offers a fuel consumption of 46.3mpg (48.7mpg with stop/start) under the older NEDC tests, but its rarity and age will affect theprice.

Diesel models are more economical, achieving 67.3mpg (72.4mpg with stop/start) under the NEDC tests.

1.2-litre petrol averages 55.4mpg (58.9mpg with stop/start), or 51.4mpg under the more stringent WLTP tests.

Abarth models have a performance focus, returning 43.4mpg under NEDC tests.

0.9-litre Twinair is a notable economy model, offering up to 70.6mpg (67.3mpg with a higher power output), though it drops to 52.3mpg under the more recent WLTP tests.

The 1.0 Hybrid version offers an official WLTP figure of 53.3mpg.

Regarding CO2 emissions:

The 1.2-litre petrol emits 119g/km (99g/km with stop/start).

The 1.4-litre emits 140g/km (135g/km with stop/start).

The diesel emits 110g/km (104g/km with stop/start).

Pre-2017 Fiat 500 models have lower VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) due to their lower CO2 emissions. After April 2017, cars are taxed at a flat rate of £190 per year.

Insurance is generally affordable, as most 500 models (excluding Abarth versions) fall into low insurance groups. Servicing costs are in line with other Fiat models and are typical for city cars.

The Car Planet verdict

The Fiat 500 is undeniably stylish, with its distinctive design and charm, making it a popular choice for those looking for a compact city car. However, its driving experience isn't as refined as some rivals, with performance and handling falling short compared to some other city cars in its class. Additionally, while it's fun to drive in certain conditions, it can feel less composed on the road, especially on rougher surfaces or in more demanding driving scenarios.

In summary, the Fiat 500 excels in its unique design and appeal but may not be the best choice for those seeking a more engaging driving experience or looking for long-term reliability without the need for repairs. Find yours today at Car Planet!
