The BMW X6 boasts a fabulous range of engines, swanky interiors, and a capacious boot. Find *your* secondhand X6 at Car Planet today!

It’s tough finding a car that’s genuinely unique. But the search stops with the BMW X6.

When it was launched we’d honestly never seen anything like it: a chunky SUV body married to the sleek sloping roofline you associated with a sporty coupé? “What is this Frankensteinian abomination?” we cried.

How wrong we were. Where once it divided opinion across the market, today the X6, resplendent in its third generation, has united car lovers by the sheer weight of its audacity. Of course there are still naysayers—they question its expense despite its seeming impracticality, especially compared to the X5 on which it’s based—but it’s now commonly considered highly desirable for both its form and function.

What’s more, there are clearly enough coupé SUV fans out there for the X6 to have become a trendsetter: multiple manufacturers now vie for the niche it’s carved out with their own rivals, like the Audi Q8 and Mercedes GLE Coupé, not to mention the Range Rover Velar and Porsche Cayenne Coupé.

Equipment, options and extras

The X6 M Sport comes absolutely stuffed with great kit, including 20in alloy wheels, cruise control, ambient lighting, heated front seats and a sports steering wheel. You might also peruse the long list of comfort, convenience and technology packs—but, just as with the X6’s competitors, they don’t come cheap.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The X6 costs about the same as an equivalent X5, and it’s also priced in line with its rivals the Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé. It’s predicted to lose its value at an almost identical rate to an equivalent X5—that’s slightly slower than the Q8, and considerably slower than the Cayenne Coupé, which is predicted to hold its value significantly better over the course of three years.

In terms of fuel economy, the xDrive30d is the best, boasting 40mpg, which compares favourably to the 35mpg of an equivalent Audi Q8. The M Competition is the worst—expect an mpg in the low 20s. (Yes, really.) That being said, despite its CO2 emissions of 187g/km undercutting the Q8 50 TDI’s 213g/km, it still falls well within the top BIK tax band.

Safety and security

The X6 is so closely related to the X5 that the safety experts at Euro NCAP felt it entirely unnecessary to crash-test it separately. But rest easy: in 2018 they awarded the X5 a full five stars. The X6 comes with lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking as standard. You might also check out the Driving Assistant Professional package for additional driver aids, including front–cross-traffic alert and automatic speed limit assist.

The Car Planet verdict

The BMW X6 is a well-rounded coupé SUV—and frankly one of the most entertaining cars in its class. It boasts a fabulous range of engines and swanky interiors, not to mention a capacious boot and attractive exterior line. Add to that a highly competitive price tag and you’re looking at one of the most enticing coupé SUVs on the market today. Oh—and our favourite is the 30d diesel, by the way.
