With its chunky SUV body curiously combined with sleek coupé-like roof and big front grille, the BMW X2 is utterly distinctive in a sea of family SUVs. Its first-generation predecessor may have been more of a muscular hatchback, but it was also shorter than the X1, so practicality took a hit. Regardless, this time round the second-generation X2 mimics the shape of the larger X4 and X6—the rest of the family can fit in comfortably without resentment for the buyer’s purchase decision.
Equipment, options and extras
The entry-level M Sport trim is handily equipped with cruise control, 19in alloy wheels, ambient lighting, automatic wipers, two-zone climate control, and heated front seats with part-leather upholstery. You can opt to add a panoramic sunroof and heated steering wheel, or go for the Technology Package which brings keyless entry, wireless phone charging, adaptive LED headlights and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
Model for model, the X2 is slightly pricier than an equivalent X1, and this differential increases again when you compare an entry-level sDrive20 M Sport with a similarly powerful Audi Q3 Sportback S line 1.5 TFSI—although that premium is for better space and performance, as well as for a slightly fresher interior in the X2. The X2 sDrive20 is also a tad more economical on fuel, and has a slightly lower CO2 output than the Q3 1.5 TFSI, which reduces its running costs and BIK tax for company car users.
Finally, if you’re considering your X2 outright, remember it will lose its value faster than other premium rivals, including the Sportback and closely related MINI Countryman.
Safety and security
The X2 hasn’t yet been tested by the safety experts at Euro NCAP, but all versions come with automatic emergency braking and a tyre pressure monitoring system. You can add the Driving Assistant pack for blind spot monitoring and rear–cross-traffic alert, or the Driving Assistant Plus pack for adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition.
