The BMW M2 effortlessly marries grip with space, and traction with handling. Find *your* secondhand M2 at Car Planet today!

The M2 is the most compact model in BMW’s M range to date—and when you consider the division’s back catalogue, you’ll notice a trend: its smaller models have generally been its most lauded. Just consider the 1M Coupé, Z3 M Coupé, and of course the original M3—all bona fide classics.

Equipment, options and extras

The M2 introduces not only rear-wheel–drive but also the option of a manual gearbox. (BMW offers an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.) Moreover, given that the M2 is the last solely combustion-powered model the M division will ever build, you can guarantee it’s going to be of historical significance.

Beneath the bonnet sits a variant of the turbocharged 3L straight-six engine that powers the latest iterations of the M3 and M4. It’s been detuned for the M2 to produce ‘only’ 454bhp—but that’s still considerably more than what was offered even by the limited-run CS version of the previous-generation model. What’s more, the M2’s adaptive suspension and lightweight carbon-fibre roof—both of which were reserved for the CS last time round—now come as standard.

Typical of the M division, the M2’s interior doesn’t meaningfully differ from that of the regular 2 Series Coupé—and that’s fine. After all, this latest-generation model is essentially a more compact version of the 4 Series, which in turn had more in common with the 1 Series hatchback. That means gorgeous materials and a first-rate build quality.

The M2 boasts a superlative infotainment system, iDrive, and you can also use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring. Everything is displayed on a 10in touchscreen, but you’ll also enjoy a rotary controller between the front seats—far less distracting to use when you’re driving than prodding a screen.

As standard from BMW, the M2 comes with a heads-up display, as well as a 12in digital driver’s display, which you can set up in all manner of configurations. You’ll also enjoy a raft of luxuries, including leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, and a Harman Kardon surround-sound stereo. There’s the option of the M Race Track Package, which boosts the top speed from 155mph to 180mph and adds carbon bucket seats and a voucher for M Intensive Driver Training—but it’s too pricey for us to recommend.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The M2 ain’t no budget buy, but it’s still priced in line with its rivals the Audi TT RS and Porsche 718 Cayman S—and it’s faster and more powerful than both.

The M2 is predicted to hold its residual value as well as another of its competitors, the Alpine A110 S, and it offers comparative fuel economy to its German sports car rivals.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP haven’t appraised the M2 for safety, but the 2 Series Coupé it’s based on was awarded four out of five stars—it missed out on full marks because it showed weak protection of a 10-year-old sitting in the back during a side impact.

Finally, note that the optional Driving Assistant pack, featuring automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, is available only if you opt for the automatic gearbox.

The Car Planet verdict

The M2 marries grip with space, traction with handling—and fascinatingly it’s one of few modern performance cars available with a manual gearbox.
