A car designed for road trips needs a big boot, comfy seats, and a large fuel tank. The BMW 6 Series ticks every one of those boxes—and a whole lot more besides.

Equipment, options and extras
Every version of the BMW 6 Series boasts a raft of goodies. The entry-level SE comes with satnav, 18in alloy wheels, cruise control, leather seats, two-zone climate control, heated front seats, and front and rear parking sensors. Then the Sport trim comes with 19in alloys and adjustable lumbar support. The M Sport has sportier exterior styling but no additional equipment. Finally, the M6 has adaptive LED headlights, bigger brakes, four exhaust pipes, an upgraded stereo, a carbon fibre roof, and M styling tweaks inside and out-.
Comfort and driving
The BMW 6 Series is an effortless drive. Its eight-speed automatic gearbox comes as standard on all versions but the M6, which has a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. The 6 Series is by no means a light car, and you feel that especially on tight bends, but it always feels planted and shrugs off bumps with ease. This makes it a brilliant cruiser, ideal for long commutes and driving holidays. It might not quite match up to its rival the Jaguar XK, but it’s far cheaper to run in diesel form, not to mention a much more practical car. Indeed, its closest competitor comes from within the BMW range itself: the 6 Series Gran Coupé, a four-door version of the same car! It’s a safer bet if you need to regularly carry four people, not only thanks to its extra doors but also by virtue of its superior rear leg room.
Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
Every engine of the BMW 6 Series is superlative, and the most popular is the 640d, whose 309bhp 3L diesel delivers a magnificent mix of power, economy and smoothness. There’s also a 321bhp 3L petrol in the 640i for those averse to diesel, and a powerful 449bhp 4.4L petrol V8 in the 650i. Meanwhile, the range-topping M6 is incredibly fast thanks to its 552bhp twin-turbo V8.
The 640d is the cheapest to run, with especially noteworthy savings over a petrol 640i. The former’s average 52mpg gives it the edge over the 640i and its 37mpg. Then there’s the 650i, a little costlier to run at 32mpg. Finally, the M6 averages just 29mpg.
When it comes to CO2 emissions, the M6 will have you forking out a small fortune in road tax. It has the highest emissions of the lineup at 231g/km. The 650i is slightly better at 206g/km, and the 640 is far cleaner-breathing at 179g/km. And none of the petrol can match the mere 145g/km of the 640d diesel.
