The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer offers a premium, efficient driving experience. Find *your* Gran Tourer at Car Planet today!

BW benefits from a loyal fanbase, many of whom transition from its sports cars and executive saloons to vehicles capable of accommodating their growing families and all the associated gear—without hesitation about maintaining that coveted badge.

This loyalty helped drive the success of the 2 Series Gran Tourer, a sibling to the 2 Series Active Tourer. Built on the same platform, the Gran Tourer extends the wheelbase by 11cm to make room for a third row of seats, offering seven-seat practicality. Combined with BMW's hallmark premium feel, a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, and well-equipped trim levels, it became a highly popular choice in the premium MPV market. This generation proved successful, running from 2015 until 2022.

Equipment, options, and extras

The 2 Series Gran Tourer offers a range of trims to suit different tastes and needs. The entry-level SE is generously equipped, featuring sat-nav, DAB radio, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and automatic lights and wipers. Upgrading to Sport adds larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, and various sporty interior and exterior styling enhancements. Luxury trim, introduced later in the range, includes leather seats and distinctive trim details, while M Sport tops the lineup with larger alloys, an aggressive body kit, and stiffer suspension—though the latter compromises ride comfort and may not suit all drivers.

Inside, the cabin feels plush and versatile, with rear seats that slide forward for extra legroom in the third row or increased boot space. For maximum utility, all passenger seats can be folded flat.

When it comes to engines, the petrol-powered 218i and 220i are smooth and capable, delivering a refined driving experience. However, for higher-mileage drivers, the diesels offer better fuel economy. The 216d is the most economical, with a claimed 68.9mpg and adequate performance for urban driving, though it can struggle on steep hills when fully loaded. The 218d adds an extra cylinder and more power, while the 220d provides robust performance and decent efficiency, albeit with higher running costs. For most buyers, the 216d strikes the best balance of economy and practicality.

Safety and security

On the road, the 220d diesel doesn’t feel as lively as it does in some other BMW models, but it offers ample low-end torque to keep the eight-speed automatic gearbox from frequent downshifting, even when the car is fully loaded. The 218d, while slightly less powerful, is noticeably more affordable and still delivers sufficient performance to handle a full load with ease.

Insurance groups range from 10 for the less powerful models to 20 for the higher-performance variants, providing options for different budgets. The 2 Series Gran Tourer originally came with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty, and its flexible service intervals can be covered by BMW’s Service Inclusive plan for new models. If buying used, it’s worth checking if any of the warranty or Service Inclusive coverage is still transferable.

The Car Planet verdict

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé offers a great combination of driver engagement and ride comfort, much like the 1 Series, along with a high-quality interior. It’s only slightly more expensive than its sibling, and its stylish coupé design will appeal to many. However, it's worth noting that rear headroom is somewhat limited, which could be a consideration for taller passengers.
