The BMW 2 Series is a superb all-rounder, especially when you get a few extras thrown in. Find *your* 2 Series at Car Planet today!

The latest iteration of the BMW 2 Series Coupé—not to be confused with the Gran Coupé, of course, or the more sensible Active Tourer—is best conceptualised as a shrunken 4 Series Coupé. It has a huge amount in common with its 4 Series cousin, unlike its predecessor the original 2 Series, which was essentially a 1 Series with a boot. This means that, like many of the most iconic cars in BMW’s illustrious history, most versions of the 2 Series are rear-wheel–drive. It also means there’s a range of fine engines to choose from, including a 3L six-cylinder petrol in the range-topping M240i version. Moreover, the interior is suitably upmarket, as is the superlative BMW iDrive infotainment system.

Although the 2 Series has no direct rivals, the Mercedes CLA offers swoopy looks for a similar outlay. And thanks to its rear doors, life’s a little easier for backseat passengers than in the 2 Series. Alternatively, if you don’t mind miniscule rear seats then the Audi TT is similarly priced, boasts excellent interiors—and is a lot of fun to drive. So today let’s explore more deeply how the 2 Series compares to its competitors—and why a secondhand 2 Series from Car Planet could be just what you’ve been looking for.

Equipment, options and extras

With the BMW 2 Series there’s no agonising over which trim to pick—because there’s only one, in the UK at least. The M Sport brings a decent amount of standard kit, although you’ll need to fork out extra if you want keyless entry, leather seats or adaptive cruise control.

Then there’s the M240i, often considered a model in its own right, so again it has no trim levels as such. That being said, you do get a few more luxuries than on lesser engines, including leather seats—although we do recommend also adding in the M Technology Pack and adaptive M suspension.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The BMW 2 Series Coupé is a relatively sporty offering from a premium German brand, so you’re not expecting a bargain price tag. However, it still costs a lot less than the larger 4 Series, and the M240i version is attractively priced compared to its competitor the Audi RS3 hot hatch.

Meanwhile, the M240i is fairly thirsty, but the 220i promises a respectable 44mpg. The 220d diesel is even more frugal—officially it goes up to 60mpg—but BMW expects the vast majority of buyers to opt for a petrol.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP awarded the BMW 4 Series a full five stars out of five for safety.

The Car Planet verdict

The BMW 2 Series Coupé is a brilliant all-rounder, with the driving manners you’d expect from a sporty BMW. The best choice for most buyers is the 220i with a few extras thrown in, but the pricier M240i is hard to resist purely by virtue of its stellar performance.
