The facelifted Audi S3 has been called "more than a mere product upgrade," a phrase that might usually sound like marketing fluff to seasoned automotive journalists. But this time, Audi may be onto something.
The pre-facelift S3 had its strengths—it was quick, sharp to drive, and handled tricky conditions with ease. However, it didn’t quite capture the fun factor of its sportier siblings, like the Audi RS3 or VW Golf R. To make matters worse, the interior felt a bit cheap compared to the previous generation.
With this update, Audi’s engineers and designers clearly had room to make improvements, and they’ve focused on exciting mechanical changes. Expect more power, quicker shifts from the automatic gearbox, and the addition of a rear torque splitter differential (more on that later).
As before, the S3 is available as either the S3 Sportback (hatchback) or S3 Saloon. The Sportback rivals the BMW M135i and Golf R, while the Saloon goes head-to-head with the BMW M240i and Mercedes-AMG A35 Saloon.

Equipment, options and extras
While the Audi S3’s interior includes diamond-stitched sport seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and a few S3 badges, it still resembles the standard A3 inside. This subtle, understated style is classic Audi, and some buyers may appreciate it. However, next to the visually striking interior of the Mercedes-AMG A35, it might feel a bit too restrained.
That said, the S3 does surpass both the A35 and VW Golf R in terms of interior quality. The mid-life facelift brought a few minor but noticeable upgrades, such as replacing the plastic dashboard ledge with a suede-wrapped panel, adding a touch of elegance. Audi also introduced extra ambient lighting strips and perforated door panels, which allow for a soft glow after dark. However, there are still some hard plastics, particularly on the center console, which makes the more solid-feeling BMW M135i a little more appealing in this area.
In terms of infotainment, BMW has an advantage. While the S3 features a 10.1-inch touchscreen, similar to the A3, it can be distracting on the move. BMW’s M135i system not only offers a touchscreen but also includes a separate rotary controller, which makes it easier to operate while driving.
Audi has also upped the S3's standard equipment, contributing to a slight price premium over equivalent models like the BMW M135i, Mercedes-AMG A35, and VW Golf R.
The S3 Black Edition comes equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, Nappa leather upholstery with heated front seats, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, ambient lighting, and a sporty body kit to set it apart from standard A3 models.
However, the range-topping Vorsprung model is likely to be the top choice for many. It includes features like adaptive dampers, matrix LED headlights, carbon-fiber interior trim, electrically adjustable front seats, a panoramic roof, and a power-operated tailgate, making it the most fully equipped S3 in the lineup.

Safety and security
When it comes to safety, the Audi S3 offers a solid set of standard features. Every S3 includes automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. The Vorsprung model adds even more advanced safety systems, such as Adaptive Cruise Assist with lane-change assistance, an exit warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert, enhancing overall driver confidence and security.
The Car Planet verdict
Following a substantial mid-life facelift, the S3 positions itself as a polished yet enjoyable alternative to the Golf R, which is no small feat. It feels sharper and more engaging to drive than both the BMW M135i and the Mercedes-AMG A35. Additionally, the S3 now boasts a more refined interior and an impressive standard equipment list, making its premium price tag more justifiable.
