The Audi A6 sits at the more affordable end of a class of fabulous models which are all quite different, each with their own unique selling points. Fortunately, the A6 holds its own in this company, with some versions boasting 12V mild-hybrid technology, which cuts fuel consumption by switching off the engine and letting the car freewheel when you lift off the accelerator between 34 and 99mph. Two of the engine choices come with that system: the 261bhp petrol and 201bhp diesel. But there’s also the 201bhp petrol engine without hybrid tech, as well as a plugin hybrid that can drive on electricity alone.
Equipment, options and extras
The A6 is generously equipped, with all versions bringing satnav and LED headlights. We recommend the entry-level Sport brings 18in alloy wheels, keyless go, leather upholstery, ambient LED interior lighting and dual-zone climate control. S Line and Black Edition both bring 19in wheels and firmer sports suspension, and the top-spec Vorsprung brings adaptive suspension, keyless entry, an upgraded stereo and a 360° camera—although this trim is ultimately too pricey for us to recommend. And anyway, lots of these features can be added through with the Sound or Comfort pack, both of which we would recommend.
Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
The A6 isn’t the cheapest luxury car by any means—for example, the entry-level Jaguar XF costs less—but it’s still inexpensive compared to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E Class, while boasting similarly strong residuals. This means the A6’s contract hire and PCP finance rates are competitive. And while its insurance is relatively pricey, servicing is much less so.
The 55 TFSIe plugin hybrid has a slightly longer electric range than its equivalent in its rival the 530e of the BMW 5 Series, and it matches the E300e. It also represents an appealing choice as a company car by virtue of its low CO2 emissions. Although, as with all plugin hybrids, bear in mind that fuel economy varies dramatically depending on how often you charge the battery.
Safety and security
Euro NCAP awarded the A6 a full five stars for safety. It comes with automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance as standard, and you can add other features including blind spot monitoring for a premium. All versions also have an alarm and immobiliser as standard.
Reliability
The A6 comes with a 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty (whichever you reach first). You can extend this for up to 5 years or 90,000 miles for a reasonable price.
