The latest Mercedes A-Class might look quite similar to its predecessor, but the company has made some important changes to this family car that could make all the difference.
For a start, it’s bigger and more spacious than before. The interior is packed with technology, and the various trim levels bring a generous amount of kit as well. You’re well catered to when it comes to what’s under the bonnet: there’s a choice of relatively affordable petrol, frugal diesel, and a couple of rapid AMG hot hatch versions. But before we delve too deeply into the A-Class, let’s check in with its key stats.

Equipment, options and extras
The Mercedes A-Class entry-level Sport Executive trim brings the basics: LED headlights, climate control, 17in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, climate control, heated front seats and wireless phone charging. AMG Line Executive adds in 18in alloys and sportier styling, and the Premium versions introduce two-zone climate control, illuminated door sills and an upgraded 225W sound system.
The range-topping AMG Line Premium Plus brings even more luxuries: 19in alloys, adaptive LED headlights and a sunroof. Inside there’s a head-up display and 360° parking camera, and the driver enjoys powered seat adjustment with a memory function—although this trim is a little too pricey for us to recommend. And in fact you can go one further—the Exclusive Launch Edition includes black exterior headlights and a Burmester 590W sound system upgrade.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2
If like many buyers you’re considering a PCP finance deal, the Mercedes A-Class will generally cost you more per month than its premium-badged rivals, including the BMW 1 Series. Prices do vary from month to month though, depending on dealer and manufacturer incentives.
Company car drivers will be interested to know that all three engines command a similar tax rate. The plug-in hybrid A250e has a much lower rate of 8%.
The A200d is especially economical, averaging 52mpg, compared to the BMW 118d’s 49mpg, and the A200 averages 41mpg, beating the BMW 118i.
Safety and security
Euro NCAP awarded the Mercedes A-Class five stars out of five, scoring better in the areas of adult occupancy and pedestrian protection than its rival the BMW 1 Series. Even the most basic versions of the A-Class come with a host of safety features: seven airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition and a driver alertness monitoring system. There’s also a popup bonnet to help cushion a pedestrian in the event of an impact. Blind spot monitoring is available with the AMG Line Premium trim and above.

The Car Planet verdict
Classy, comfortable and packed with technology, the Mercedes A-Class stands among the finest premium-badged options in the family car class.
